GISBORNE HARBOUR WORKS.

.IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS.

[BT TELEGRAPH.— FRESS ASSOCIATION'.]

'!'■" Gisborne, Tuesday. \ Me. F. W. Marchant, reporting to the Harbour Board on the harbour conditions, recommends with a view to counteracting the effect of the heavy range at the harbour entrance, the construction of a wave of , trucks along the western groyne at a cost of £600, or the extension of the breakwater, costing £10,000. The Board decided to adopt the former expedient. In concluding his report, Mr. Marchant says: " The works have, no doubt, been of Value, but it is evident that you cannot possibly hope to give this fine district easy access. to tha outside world, which it assuredly will on© day demand, by. any addition . to or amendment of existing works. It is quite possible and easy to construct > a breakwater harbour to the north-east of the river entrance, 60 that the largest vessels trading to the colony «©uld load at the', wharves to the maximum draught. Such a harbour would not render the present works useless,. would supplement and improve them, giving a calm entrance to the river port. Such a deepwater harbour, I believe, would be well within the resources of the district. 7 ' The Board instructed Mr Marchant to report on the outer harbour scheme. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] • ■'.;■■■, Gisborne. Tuesday. The Harbour Board was waited upoi|. today by a large deputation of commercial men, urged that whilst Mr. F. W. Marchant was in the district he should be requested to report upon the project for a new breakwater harbour. ' It was pointed out that the increase in the district's trade was such that improved shipping facilities were imperatively necessary. The Board agreed to the request, and Mr. Marchant, having stated that the provision of a deepwater harbour would be an easy matter, and well within the resources of the district, he was retained at a fee of 600 guineas to .prepare a report and plans. A fee of £200 was paid him for the report on the river conditions.
