PROJECTED SHIPPING COMBINE.
REPLY TO GERMAN COMPETITION.
ENGLISH EFFORT TO -SAVE TRADE. 1-. * - • ■ . V . . ■ By Telesraph— Association—Copyright. (Received June 12, 5.36 p.m.) Perth, June 12. The Ceylon files by the steamer Ortona contain a London message from Reuter to the effect tnat the Cunard, P. and 0., and Pacific shipping companies had announced a joint Australian and Far Eastern service. It was assumed that the object was the securing of the passenger traffic against keen foreign competition.
Captain Fletcher, commander of the Ortona, in an interview yesterday, said that unless two or three of the' great English companies combined against the "North German Lloyd, they would be run off the line until the Germans had practically the whole passenger trade of the world in their hands. He could say from his own knowledge that a big combine , was coming off in England before long against' the German company.
