WAIAPU LICENSING DISTRICT.

DRINKING AMONG THE MAORIS.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— own correspondent.]

Gisbohne, Thursday. Sergeant Mackenzie, reporting on the licensed houses of Gisborne for the meeting of the Waiapu Licensing Bench to-morrdfr, states that licensing matters on the whole are on a fairly satisfactory footing, and there is not much ground for complaint. Heavy and excessive drinking is undeniable, but hotelkeepers try to keep it within bounds. Constable McLeod (Tola-go Bay) in his report strongly opposes the granting of conditional licenses in the country districts, as they lead to a good deal of drinking among the Maoris. Other country police reports indicate am excessive amount of drinking amongst the native population.
