The special San Francisco number of the Auckland Weekly News, issued to-day, contains a remarkable wealth of superb illustrations. showing the great city of the Northern Pacific as it stood before the terrible catastrophe of .April 19. A magnificent double-page panoramic shows the ill-fated city from Neb Hill, and depicts the whole of the thickly-populated districts which suffered most severely from earthquake t nd fire from Telegraph Hill along the great stretch of waiter front to the end of the bay. This view, which was recently taken, conveys an exact knowledge of the great city as it stood, and will be valuable as a record of the great disaster. Other city views comprise all the great buildings in the heart of the city, including the Call Office, Chronicle and Examiner newspaper buildings, the principal hotels, City Hall, and some of the palatial residences which were destroyed, together with harbour views, and the parks in which the homeless took refuge. There are also two fine drawings by the News special artist, which portray vividly the scene at the time of the earthquake, and the progress of the fire through the doomed city. The pictures aire faithful to detail, as supplied by the most recent cables, and convey a realistic idea of the occurrence. Other views dealing with the catastrophe include a striking panoramic, showing the effects of a fire on a modern American city. The picture, which is of the great Baltimore fire, enables one to imagine what must have occurred' a,t' San Francisco on a much larger scale. , Numerous other groups, views, and portraits, including all the recent current events of note in New Zealand, and the usual number of high-class scenic views, together with abundance of high-class letterpress, contribute to a most attractive number, and a publication which for general public interest stands unrivalled' in the colonies.
