AUCKLAND WEDNESDAY AFTER-
NOON UNION.
• x. secretary's report at the genera! meetlug held on Tuesday last was most encouraging, and as it stated "showed that the union had every cause foi congratulation on the success which attended the inaugural season." Starting with a membership of rhre« teams, it quickly worked up to live senior teoms, and eventually wound up the year with nine teams (five senior and four junior) competing under its auspices. Hie loss financially will be quickly wiped out, and the smallness of the debit' balance demonstrated that, in charging for admission, the union had acted wiselv. Had they done so earlier in the season their finances would have shown a credit balance. All the clubs have now held their annual ■meetings, and practice will commence next Wednesday. The Butchers are as usual leading the way, and will play a scratch match with a mixed team from the Grocers and Milkmen and Drapers on the Domain. The Grocers and Milkmen have been strengthened by the inclusion of young Savoury, wlio played so well last year for the Bakers; whilst Littlejohn has quite recovered from his injuries of the last match of last season, and will also be able to play. Their pack though still on the light side will be stronger than last year, and should make a good show against the weighty Butchers' pack. Tlh> Bakers have lost-Savoury, but will probably have the burly ex-Newton forward, Lewis, included in their ranks. Pierce, Stubbing, and all their old backs will be able to turn out. •
With the exception of Wallace, the exRotorca. player, the Drapers and Chemists have no new blood—in fact so weak will they be that it is more than probable that the unic, will rearrange the amalgamation of the trades without clubs, and allow the Hotelkeepors (last year in: ited with the Hairdressers) to join forces with the Drapers in substitution of the Chemists. The question will be decided at the adjourned meeting of the union on Tuesday next. The Tramways Oo.'s. Football Club aro making another effort to join the union, hue will probably suffei from the same drawback as heretofore, viz., the uncertainty of shifts amongst the men, which completely spoils any 'chance of combination.
