HOSPITAL DEMONSTRATION AT WAIHI.

[BY. TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Waihi, Monday. The United Friendly Societies' Hospital Conference held their animal hospital demonstration vesterday afternoon. It proved very successful, the collection taken at the hospital grounds amounting to £60, so that with the Government subsidy the hospital funds will benefit by £130. There was a large gathering, which was presided j over by the Mayor (Mr. T. Gilmour). The volunteers, fire brigade, Mayor and councillors, and the various friendly societies met in the main street, and a start was made for the hospital grounds, hundreds of people following on the side walks. Mr. C. Clews, who represented the Hospital Conference, spoke of the great advantage of joining the conference. The Mayor spoke of the great responsibility and financial burden which had been cast upon the borough in the maintenance of the hospital, and asked all for their practical sympathy and help. Mr. Max D. King gave an interesting resume of the hospital movement, and showed that the sum of £600 had been raised, a large proportion by the Waihi people, for the erection of a hospital in Ohinemuri. This £600 had been placed to the credit of the trustees at Paer»a, and the amount was still in the bank there. However, because Waihi could no longer do without its hospital, and had initiated the movement with successful results, the trustees refused to hand the money over to Waihi. Waihi should at least get its share of the £600 back. The total amount of money raised since the hospital was started was £10,701 16s lid, and the expenditure to March 21, 1905, amounted to £10,325 13s 6d. The last Government return showed that the average death-rate in the Waihi Hospital was only one for every 30 patients, whilst the average death-rate for hospitals in the colony was one for every 12£. Addresses on behalf of the friendly societies were given by the Rev. Father Brodie (Hibernian), and Messrs. F. W. Seymour (Rechabites), .1. Dorance (Foresters), and D. T. Saunders (Oddfellows). The Rev. Woolloxall (Primitive Methodist) and Mr. Foster (Church of Christ) also spoke. Apologies were read for the unavoidable absence of the Revs. A: Buckland (Anglican), Perry (Baptist), and J. Pattullo (Presbyterian). The Waihi Federal Band played several selections, and the Liedertafel gave a vocal contribution.
