MAGISTRATES COURT STATISTICS.

INCREASED BUSINESS. The returns of the Magistrate's Court, Auckland, for the year ending March 31, 1906, show a marked increase in the number of criminal and civil cases as compared with previous years. The following are the- figures for the years 1905-6 and 1904-5, the figures for the year 1904-5 being given in parentheses: — Amount sued for, £42,942 Is Id (£34,326 3s Id), an increase of £8623 18s; amount recovered, £22,965 15s (£19,457 14s 6d), increase £3508 0s 6d; amount received in civil fees, £2544 8s 3d (£2074 14s), increase £469 14s 3d; amount received! in criminal fees and fines, £2360 13s 3d (£1825 9s lid), increase £535 3s 4d ; civil cases heard, 2106 (1825), increase 281 ; and criminal cases dealt with, 4695 (4690), increase five. Five hundred and eleven criminal and civil sittings were held during the year just ended, which, compared with the number of sittings held in 1904-5, .shows an increase of 36. The number of plaint notes entered during the year was 3926, as against 3143 for the proceeding 12 months, ar increase of 783. The total number of distress warrants and judgment summonses issued also show marked increases.
