Ellen Trevor, a domestic servant, has applied to the Divorce Court for a declaration that her marriage with Henry Ashcroft, son of an ex-Mayor of Bootle, was legal. The defendant Ashcroft admitted intimate relations with the plaintiff, but denied that they were married. He alleged that his signature on the register of the marriage was a forgery. The judge decided that the parties were married.
