THE PATEA DROWNING ACCIDENT.
FURTHER PARTICULAR [BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Hawera, Friday. Further particulars regarding the drowning accident at Patea on Thursday afternoon, by which Captain 'Peterson (pilot) and Charlie Larson (assistant pilot) lost their lives, show that Peterson, Larsen, and a man named Harry Hansen were taking soundings at the bar when a wave upset their boat. After they had been struggling in the water for some time the boat was righted, and the men clambered into it, but it was capsized again twice. Larsen sank first. Peterson was washed out of the boat and carried some distance beyond it by another wave. He tried to swim to the shore, but did not succeed, and sank. Hansen clung to the upturned boat, and was rescued. _ Both of the deceased were married men with families. Peterson was well known, having been captain of boats trading to Patea for many rears. He had been pilot two years.
