BOAT CAPSIZES AT TAIRUA.
PERILOUS EXPERIENCE OF
THE OCCUPANTS.
[lit TELEGRAPH.OWN' CORRESPONDENT.]
Tairva, Tuesday. Considerable anxiety was felt here this morning when it became known that a boat had capsized on the bar, and that the occupants were in the watei. It appears that Messrs. O'Connor and Hedley, two prospectors, coming in from Tekaro, attempted to cross the bar hi an open boat. There was a heavy sea on, and the boat was swamped. Hedley left the upturned boat, and swam for the shore, landing at Paku. O'Connor kept to the boat. Hedley sent a horseman to the township for assistance, and the Northern Steamship Company's oil launch, in charge of Captain Meyenberg, with Captains Pankow and Allen and Messrs. Matthews and Pulham on board, immediately left the wharf, and after safely crossing the bar, notwithstanding the nasty sea, succeeded in rescuing O'Connor, who was still clinging to the boat, which had drifted a long way out. Beyond the shock, Hedley and O'Connor appeared little the worse after being rescued from their perilous position.
