SENSATION AT NEWTOWN.
ENGAGED COUPLE TAKE
POISON.

Wellington, Tuesday. Allan Hinchcliffe, aged 28. a canvasser, and Mabel Clark, aged 21, who resides with her father at No. 19, Wright-street, created a sensation at Newtown last evening by taking poison.
It scorns that. Hinchcliffe, who is out, of employment, has been living at the- house of Mr. Clark and, it, is stated, became ensracd to Miss Clark.
Last evening after a conversation with her mother Miss Clark went to sneak to Hineheliffe, and shortly after Mrs*. Clark made certain inquiries which led her to believe that, the pair had taken poison. Medical aid was summoned, and Miss Clark received treatment at the house, but Hiuclu-liffe went off to Nurse Tricker's, near by. He asked for a glass of water, and after drinking it sat on the kerb groaning. Nurse Tricker took him into her house and summoned a doc-tor. who,.after using a stomach pump, ordered his removal to the hospital. In the meantime Detective Kemp and Constable William had been informed of tho occurrence, and took charge of Hindichffe, and removed him to the hospital, where he is now under police surveillance. Miss (lark i* to-day reported to be out of danger, and Hineheliffe is said by the hospital authorities to be very much better.
