HARBOUR DREDGING CONTRACT.
PROCEEDINGS DEEMED UNSATIS-
FACTORY.
At the Harbour Board meeting yesterday the Works and Tariff Committee, which had been instructed to report in the matter of Tuck's dredging contract, which had been submitted to arbitration and occasioned so much discussion at the previous Board meeting, reported as follows: —
" Messrs. Julian, La Roche, and Taylor, having answered various questions in relation to Tuck's contract, retired, and after considerable discussion it was then resolved : That the proceedings in connection with the determination of Tuck's dredging contract are very unsatisfactory, and are not sufficiently explained by the officers of the engineer's department at the time. The committee, however, recommends the Board to take no further action in the matter."
In this connection it should be stated that the contract referred to was entered into and determined prior to the present engineer (Mr. W. H. Hauler's) appointment to the Board's sen-ice.
The chairman I the Hon. E. Mitohelson) said he would like to make it known that Mr. Julian was not the chairman of the Board at the time of the contract, as had been supposed. The late Mr. Gunson was then the chairman, and Mr. Julian did not take the chair until afte:;- Mr. Tuck had ceased work on the contract.
The committee's report was then adopted.
