Waihi, Tuesday. The new Presbyterian Church, which is a handsome structure, capable of seating about 500 persons, was opened on Sunday. At aquarter to eleven a.m. a large crowd had gathered outside the church, where the Rev. R. Sommerville (Moderator), the Rev. Mr. Walker (St. James', Auckland), the Rev. Mr. Thompson (Thames), the. Rev. J. Pattullo (pastor of the Waihi Church), Mr. T. Gilmour (Mayor of Waihi), were in attendance. The Rev. J. Pattullo presented the Mayor with a silver key, with which the doors were opened, and .the church declared to be open and dedicated to God. The dedication sermon was preached by the Rev. Mr. Walker. There was a very large congregation. -Services were also held in tho afternoon and evening, the church being .crowded, at night. The Rev. R. Sommerville conducted the evening service. The singing of the choir, assisted by the church orchestra, was a feature of the day's services. Collections were taken up at each service, and over £45 5s was raised. A special meeting of the Waihi Miners and Workers' Union was held on Saturday night, Mr. J. Newth (president) in the chair. The question of the lock-out at Reefton was discussed at length, and it was finally resolved to strike a levy of Is per month on each member until the committee are satisfied that no further payments are necessary. The arbitration award was then dealt with. Four delegates were appointed in reference to the matter, and the appointment of a fifth to represent Waikino was referred to that branch. The delegates, consisting of Messrs. J. Newth, D. Johnson, J. Cotter (representing the mines), and A. McNaughton (representing the batteries), were instructed to confer with the mineowners, with full power to act.
The following are the results obtained by Waihi students at the annual examinations for schools of mines, held last December: — Senior practical chemistry: first class, F. J. Fleming, 82 per cent.; second class, G. C. Evans, 61 per cent. Junior practical chemistry : First class, 11. J. Morgan, 78 per cent.; second class, J. S. Langford, 69 per cent.; A. R. Burnell, 56 per cent,; C. Darby, 56 per cent. Junior theoretical chemistry: Second class, R. J. Morgan, 66 per cent. Senior practical assaying: First class, L. M. Bell, 85 per cent.; F. J. Fleming, 75 per cent.; L. Shaw, 75 per cent. ; R. J. Morgan, 74- per cent.; second class, Colin Campbell, 65 per cent. Junior -practical assaying: Seoond class, J. Spearing, 69 per cent.; H. Aitken, 57 per cent.; C. Darby, 57 per cent.; third class, L. Shaw, 50 per cent. Senior wet assaying: First class, G. Evans, 71 per cent. Junior wet assaying: First class, F. J. Fleming. Metallurgy of gold and silver: First class, It. J. Morgan, 79 per cent.; H. Aitken, 77 per cent. Mining: Second class, P. J. A. Mackie, 64 per cent. Ventilation : Second class, J. Scoble, 59 per cent.; third class, G. Mackie, 53 per cent. ; R. E. Odell, 46 per cent. Pumping and winding: Second class, G. Mackie, 62 per cent. Land and mine surveying: First class. G. Mackie, 74- per cent. ; third class, R. E. Odell, 50 per cent. Explosive: First class, G. Mackie, 83 per cent.; R. E. Odell, 76 per cent. Senior electricity : First class, W. Gates, 80 per cent.; F. M. Ludwig, 78 per cent. : second class, T. Snow, 64 per cent.; T. O'Sullivan, 63 per cent,; third class, W. McLennan, 50 per cent. Junior electricity: Third class, J. Sheehan, 49 per cent. Junior mathematics: First class. R. J. Morgan, 82 per cent. ; second class, .J. S. Langford, 68 per cent.; C. Darby, 59 per cent. Mechanical drawing: Second class, J. S. Langford, 58 per cent. In all 16 first class certificates have been gained, 17 second class, and six third class. Students from the Waihi School of Alines have gained the highest marks in the colony in seven Subjects.
Tho half-yearly meeting of the Waihi Workers' Co-operative Society, Ltd., was held last evening. Mr. J. Murray, the president, occupied the chair. The balancesheet was read and adopted. The profit for the half-year ending January 16 was £305 9s 2d. The. turnover for tho same period was £8032. The grocery department showed a turnover of £6691 12s 3d: and bakery, £1340 14s Id. The election of officers resulted as follows:— W,. R. Dundas. vicepresident (unopposed): committee, Messrs. D. Gardiner, I). Galdie, J. Delanev, and G. Wyatt.
