Ixsr-KfTOn O'Beikn, whose transfer from Dunedin was recommended by the Commission which inquired into police matters, has not been advised of the reported decision of the Cabinet to send him to Wanganui. nor has he received any official intimation of the appointment of Inspector Kiely, of Wanganui, to the charge of the Dunedin district. Inspector O'Brien lias been in the police force for 31 years. He first joined the service in Dunedin as constable, and three years afterwards was- promoted to the rank of sergeant. Two yearslater he was appointed a detective and transferred to Oainarn. In 1899 he was transferred from Oamaru to Dunedin, where he occupied the position of chief detective, and two years later he was promoted to the rank of sub-inspector, and transferred to Cliristchurch. Sixteen mouths later he was raised to the rank of inspector and appointed to the charge of the Napier district, and on the retirement of Inspector Pardy, in Marclf, 1902, he was given charge of the Dunedin district. Inspector Kiely was promoled to the position of a sub-inspector at about the same time as Inspector O'Brien and came to Dunedin in 1899, where he occupied the position of sub-inspector under Inspector Pardy. On July 1, 1902. he was promoted to the position of inspector, and given charge of the Wanganui district, where he is now stationed.
