HOUSE BURNED AT WAIFU.
At North River, Waipu, on December 9, a two-storeyed house, owned and occupied . .by Mr. Melnnis, -was, with its furniture, ; completely destroyed by fire. It appears ..J that Mrs. Mclnnis retired to bed about ten p.m.. leaving a small tire in the kitchen grate. Every thing appeared to be quite ■•-.'.' safe when Miss Mclr.nis returned home about midnight, although phe did not go into the kitchen. At two a.m. Miss Melnnis was awakened by her grandmother informing her that the house was on fire, and it was found that the flames were • bursting through the roof of the top bedroom alongside of tne chimney. It is supV: posed that the outbreak was caused by the fire being left in the grate. Neither the house (valued at £150)- nor furniture (valued at £100) was insured.
