SALE OF WORK.-— —~•--'■• ; : At the Choral Hall yesterday afternoon Her Excellency Lady Plunket opened a sale of work in aid of Dr. Bainarclo's.. Homes. The opening' ceremony was feet wwn'for three o'clock, i l and punctually, timei'BeP Ladyship arrived, accompanied by the Hon. Kathleen Plunket. She was met at the' door of the hall by Mrs. Mactier and Mr. W. F. Harrop, honorary seeretairy and Ires-- ■' surer respectively to the fund, and conduct- i ed to the stage. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) delivered an impressive • address on ..the late Dr. Barnardo and' his lifework, and urged his hearers to help to carry on the work of that great ! benefactor. There was an axiom that oharity should begin at' home, but it was a poor sort of • charity that stayed there. r',;. Moreover, His Worship considered, the cause for which he now pleaded was a national one. The con- ~ verting of so ; many thousands of waif and | : stray children into reputable citizens was of ■• ~ ] incalculable > benefit to the nation. Lady Plunket also delivered a brief eulogy of the late Dr.. Barnardo—•concurring in the Mayor's remarks—and ' declared the bazaar ' open amid applause. She was presented by Miss Hazel Craig with a lovely bouquet of i pink roses. Her Excellency and -X the;-Hon. Miss Plunket then made a round of the various stalls, purchases being made at teach, and subsequently partook of. afternoon tea in company with the Mayor and Mayoress, Lady' Campbell, Mnr. Seymour Thome George, > Mrs. T.C. Williams (Wei-. lington), and the Rev. Dr. Puichas. The Ball , presented a charming spectacle, the stalls,-representing various'suburbs, being exquisitely arranged ! with festoons of art muslin, lycopodium, flights of butterflies in paper work, etc.. The Parnell stall was pre- -; , * aided over by Mrs. D. Kelly and the Misses '£', Haselden, Boylari. and ■ Woodhouse. Pou- *?>: aonby No. 1 stall: Mesdames Cockroft, Misses H. Jones, R. Smith and Takle. Mount Eden: The Misses Rendell:(3). Ponsonby No. 2 _ (sweet ; stall): The Misses Knight (2), Crichton and Ring. Takapuna.:, . Mrs. Jas. Buchanan, Misses Kirk, ( Corry, :..,,.' and Seaman.' ■■ Mount Roskill: Mrs.' Medley, Mrs. Turner and Miss Medley. The flower and fruit stall, a pretty erection in ' white trellis work, over whioh trailed greenery, occupying the centre of .the haH, was a conspicuous feature. Those in charge ; were: The' Misses Fountain and Mr. ~ Dears-ley. The afternoon tea department,'." "-- in which very brisk business was done, wax presided over by Mesdames J.-. Craig, W. ' ■■■' ■ H. Smith, S. L. P. Rimmer, Miiß : Seaman,, and young lady assistants. Altogether th«. show of work is most' creditable'to the.promoters. The sale will be continued to-day,' In the evening a very attractive ooncerfiprogramme is advertised.
