THIRTY LIVES LOST IN FIRE. A HEROIC SLATER. . . SAVES HELPLESS LODGERS. By Telegraph,— Association.—Copyright. London. November 19. A FIRE occurred last night in a model lodging-house at Glasgow. Of the inmates thirty lost their lives either by suffocation or burning. (Received November 20, 9.36 p.m.) London, November 20. Thirty-two men perished in the fire at a lodging-house in Glasgow, and 32 men were rescued, though most of them were severely burned. The lire occurred in Councillor Nickol's lodging-house. It started in the fourth floor and spread to the attic, whence a slater named Finlay helped three, a cripple, a blind man, and a paralytic through a window along the roof and down a ladder, from a tower of the building. Seventeen others followed them in safety. Fifteen were found incinerated in an attic and the rest on the fourth floor. '' ' • The model lodging-houses of Glasgow wero built by the municipality, and are used mostly by regular wage-earners. The municipality has under consideration now. the providing of lodging-houses for the " dissolute" poor. . •
