THE FLAX INDUSTRY.

STATEMENT BY SIR J. WARD.

[Br TELEGKArH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

INVERCARGILL, Monday. A deputation from the Southland Flaxmillers' Association waited on Sir Joseph Ward to-day representing that there was considerable dissatisfaction among members with the system of grading. They contended that the standard set by graders was more costly to produce than that which was more suited to the requirements of manufacturers, and asked that the standard should be fixed by a conference of graders, producers, and exporters. Sir Joseph said he would telegraph to the Minister for 'Agriculture, suggesting that, a conference should be arranged at the different centres, so that a satisfactory .standard might bo arrived at. The question raised with regard to tho reduction of freights to London would also be considered.
