The members of the Akarana Rifle Club fired the first trophy matches of the season on Saturday afternoon at Penrose. IHe weather was warm, with a steady wind Wowing across the range. Seven shots wore fired at each of the 200 yds, 500 yds, and 700 yds distances, and some good scoring resulted. The A class members competed for a cup, presented to' the club by one of its vicepresidents (Mr. M. M. McCallum). _ Mr. W. Cox, with the score of 90, got in his first win for this,' while in the B class. Mr. J. Anderson, with the splendid score of 9.5, finished first.for Mr. W. Thome's gold medal. The highest range scores were the 3* each of Messrs. W. Cox and J. Anderson at 200 yds, the 32 each of Messrs. A. G. Cooke, C. A. Lee, and A. J. King at 500 yds, and Mr. J. J. Buchanan's 29 at 700 yds. ; lie light at the 700 yds range was very variable. The principal scores are as under : — class : Mr. W. Cox, 90; Mr. J. J. Buchanan, 89; Mr. J. McCarthy, 86; Mr. A. G. The anniversary services in connection with the Alexandra-street school commenced in the' Choral Hall yesterday, and proved very successful. The collections for the day, -including donations by "parents and friends, amounted to £59 Is lid.
