GERMANY IN THE PACIFIC.
. PROPOSED PENAL SETTLEMENT. By Telegraph Press Association.— Sydney, July 25. /It is reported that a proposal has been made to establish a German penal settlement on the Admiralty Islands, in the Bismarck Archipelago. Long-term prisoners sent from Germany on completing their sentence will be given grants of land in order to enable them to become colonists. The residents -of the German Archipelago are strongly opposed to this course, and a representative public meeting has'decided to forward a protest to the German' Government in the matter. ■ ■ ' ■ (Received July 28, 1.40 a.m.) Sydney, July 25. In reply to a question in the Assembly to-day, Mr. Carmthers stated that the Agent-General had been instructed to make representations to the Imperial Government in regard to the position of Australian settlers in the Marshall Islands. (Received July 20, 1.40 a.m.) Brisbane, July 25. The Premier, in answer to inquiries regarding the reported German penal settlement in the Marshall Islands, stated that if correct he would make representations to the Imperial Government on. the matter.
