THE TICHBORNE CASE.
TO TilE EDITOR. Sir,—ln your publication of Monday last I noticed hit account of an interview with a Mr. Travis, who is reported to have said that it is a mistake to say that young Tichborne was drowned in a vessel called the Osprey. The Osprey, he says, ran ashore and no one was drowned. Having always taken a great interest in the Tichborne case-, I was surprised to read this, and was unaware that it; was ever hinted that lie was drowned in a vessel called the Osprey. On April 20, 185*, Roger Tichborne and his valet went on hoard a ship called the Bella at Rio de Janeiro. She was a Liverpool-owned vessel and commanded' by Captain Birkott. Her destina- j tion was New York, and Ticliborne took a. | passage for that port. From that day to this nothing has been ever heard of the Bella, or any of her passengers or crew. The Tichborne claimant, in his evidence in Court, stated that be was picked up in a boat in mid-ocean with several others by a vessel called the Osprey, and taken to Melbourne, in the year 185*. but as the official records at the Melbourne office failed to show that any vessel of tho name of the Osprey arrived there in that year, and Lloyd's register bad no boat, by that name trading to Australia, and further, the claimant could not tell the Court the name of the captain or any of the crew or passengers of the boat which he said resoued him, the judge decided not to waste any more time about the Osprey.—l am. etc., April 29 Constant Reader.
