THE LAND TENURE AND THE POLITICAL AND LABOUR LEAGUE.
TO THE EDITOl!.
.Sir,l will tell you of one case that came under my notice, and it is only, one out of dozens which I've actually seen and of hundreds taking place continually. It was in a country store, well, not 100 miles out of the Auckland province. I was simply waiting passing Ihe time for the tide to go back that [ might take the beach road home when & young woman, or a girl rising into womanhood, came into the store. She had a Maori kit in her hand, and her whole attire consisted of a- flour bag, ends cut out anil openings for the arms, the lower end reaching just above the knees. She went up to the storekeeper ' (or bis wife, who was standing beside him) and asked for what goods she wanted. She was given them, although it appeared to me grudgingly. When she bad gun:. I went up to the storekeeper, curiosity prompting me to know more of the case, when I was told the name and that there was a numerous family. "They are settlers, said my informant, "up the river, and the land is not much account, and there they are. They can't lice on it, and are afraid to leave it, in case they should lose it. They are pretty well into me, but I have not the heart to refuse them, although 1 see little prospect for them." Now let some of those Political League prattlers go out into the wilderness and gel some experience of land, and, as Solomon says: "Get wisdom; she will exalt you," and then come and tell the world what they think of it. It is a true saying that none can. bring up children so well as those who have none, and 1 so it is with those wiseacres and their notions and nostrums about settlement.— I am, etc.,
