THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP.
Majc. Taylor, recently interviewed in America, said, explaining his absence from the track last season :—" I had been racing continually twice 01 thief times a week, »nii sometimes five or six times, for the past four years. The only interval/ I had W.'e when I made trips irorr one country ' to another, a* when I visited j Australia, New Zealand, and such places, where I bad contracts to appear. No racing athlete could keep up the severe work 1 experienced without risking either of two things, viz., * falling oh" in form, with a consequent loss of prestige, or, what was more probable, the ending of one's career by related over-strain. In taking a twelve months' rest, however, I have new got, a few more years of racing before me, and J am now anxiously waiting the time when this year's world's championships are to be run," Asked as to the probable result of this year's classical event, Taylor said that outside himself there would be about five really dangerous men to be reckoned with. "Lawson," ho remarked, '•according to Australian reports, is riding- bette.- than "ver. and therefore look; to have an excellent chance. Kramer, however, and Fenn. two riders who hav* not. yet competed in Europe, are about the fastest men against whom I ever rode, and will likely give the most trouble. Then there is Mayer, the .•.-Frenchman, a terrific sprinter for 300 yards. * and one likely to win a race if only he gats going in time." The American, when v asked about his own chance:, modestly rep'ied that he never felt better, but be could ~ not definitely assert that he would win. No man, he said, is sure of victory until he ; h»t >rossed the line -.head of hif opponents.
