RESISTING THE POLICE.
DISGRACEFUL CONDUCT OF A
CROWD.

Napier, Monday. A ursTt RTtANi>: took place at Port Ahuriti on Saturday evening. A man named Joseph F.urelly was being arrested for drunkenness, when he became violent, and the constable called for assistance. A man named James Knowles proceeded to help him. Farrelly kicked' Knowles in the face, and a crowd which had' collected hustled Knowles and the policeman, and Farrelly got away. Later on Constable. Ess.h>ii. appeared, and, with Constable Mellsop, found Farrelly in a yard off Hnrditfgo Road. The man again turned on the constables, biting and kicking furiously, while a crowd which had collected ridiculed and hooted the police. After a time Constable McAlister came, on the scene. Hint Farrelly was overpowered. Constable Mellsop had the back of one of his hands 'badly marked by the man's teeth. Farrelly was to-day fined a total of £6 and costs foi disorderly conduct and resisting the police.
