[FROM OT7E OWN CORRESPOXDKXX.] THE AV'haugarei Rifles turned out in good force last Thursday evening to the instruction parade held at the drill hall. ColourSergeant Pearce took the names of those who intend proceeding to Auckland on the 20th inst. to the Easter encampment, and most of the members of the corps notified their intention of going, the idea of a genera! camp seeming very popular. The Whangarei troop of the Marsden Mounted Rifles will leavo Whangarei for Auckland on Monday, the 17th inst., under Lieutenant Rastrick. Major Eccles, commander of the regiment, will accompany them, and will he in charge during the encampment. The Maungakaramea troop will .join in at Mangapai and the Vv'aipu troop at Waipu. The Otamatea squadron, under Captain Nntsford, will join tile Marsdens at Warkworth the next day. and the two squadrons will then proceed to the Wade, where orders will he received as to how they are to go oil to Auckland. The mounted' men are making great preparations for the journey, and the general camp seems to be as popular with them as it is with the infantry company here. Saturday, a shooting match will he held between teams of 10 men from the No. 1 Ohinemuri Rifles and the No. 3 Ohinemuri Rifles. 'L'ho former team will he as follows:— Hubbard. Sergeants Kenny. Shaw, and E. 11. Hubbard, Corporals Dennerly and Ogden. Privates Bray, Roadie, Thompson, and .1. Hubbard. Our Iluntly correspondent writes:—The competition tor the Green and Colebrook shield was started ou Saturday at the range, Huntly West, The day was bright and sunny, though a somewhat strong west wind blew right across the target. The competition in the first distance was keen and exciting, and the shooting was distinctly good. Only the first, of the three distances (200 yds. 500 yds, and 800 yds) was shot. The match is to be continued on llio Bth and 15th inst. The conditions wore those as tabulated for the annual class firing, seven shots at each range, the possible being 28. The winner was found in Private D. Bulloch, Corporal George Poarcc, who was within one of the possible, being runner-up. Appended aro the scores: — Private D. Bulloch 23. Corporal George Pearce 27, Sergeant A. R. Davis and Sergeant Alf. Turner 26; Sergeant W. G. S. Stephenson, Privates Hammond. J. A. Ralph, T. Ralph, and H. Smith, 24; Captain Elliot and Private Win. Parkes 23. Private L. Parker 22; ColourSergeant A. Crowder, Sergeant 11. A. McKinnon, and Corporal R. Maiming, 21. A handicap sweepstake was also shot off, the conditions being five shots nt 200 yds. It was won by Sergeant Davis with a possible, Private J. A. Ralph being second with 27. The shield presented by Messrs. Green and Colebrook is a very handsome one. On a base of dark wood, beautifully polished and carved, lies a largo shie'd of sterling oxidised silver. Hound the central shield, and embedded in the woodwork, are a, number of smaller shields in silver for the names of the winners and the date of the competition. The conditions are that the shield must be won twice in succession or three times, at intervals before it finally becomes the property of the winner.
