POLICE COURT NEWS. Yesterday's sitting of the Police Court was held before Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M. Drunkenness: The onlv inebriate was a woman, a previous offender, who was fined 20s and costs; in default, 48 hours. By-law Cases: Percy Olliver was fined 10s and costs, 7s, for riding a bicycle along Ponsonby Road after sunset without a light. Charles Craydon was fined 10s and costs for allowing his horse to wander in Pattesonstreet. Richard Murphy was summoned for driving a cab on the tramway line in front of a car in such a niannei as to obstruct it. A tine of 10s and costs, £2 3s, was imposed. Assaulting a Constable: Henry Lewis, charged with l«ring drunk and with assaulting Constable Finlayson while in the execution to his duty, pleaded guilty. Constable Finlayson Said ho arrested accused on a charge of drunkenness in Albert-street at fivo minutes past six p.m. on Tuesday. He went to put him in a cab, but the prisoner refused to go, and kicked him on the leg. He then caught, witness by tho neck of the coat. A struggle then ensued, and both fell to the ground. Accused kicked him about tho body. Someone came to his (the constable's) assistance, but accused kicked him in the eye. The con: table said his eye was blackened in the struggle. Tho magistrate said ho had previously emphasised the- necessity of protecting tho police against ruffians. There were occasions when the police exceeded their duty, but no evidence to that effect bad lx>en given in this case. Accused was sentenced to three months' hard labour. On the charge of drunkenness, ho was convicted and discharged.

Boy Thieves: Two boys, aged eleven and fourteen, were charged with stealing two bridles and a saddle, valued at £7, the property of Georgina Crowther, on April i, at Remuern. Both boys pleaded guilty, and as it was their first offence, they'were convicted and ordered to com© up for sentence when called upon.
