NOISY AUCKLAND.

TO THE KDITOK. Sir,—ln wandering about your city I have been much impressed and much annoyed by the fearful amount of noise that exists within it. Perhaps I am more sensitive than the ordinary mortal, but whether that be the cass or no. I feel I have a just grievance. The railways are responsible for the wors'. noise that exists here. I cannot understand why it .should be necessary for an engine to give five or more excruciating shriek- before moving, and that, sir, is what happens here. 1 quite realise that it is necessary for an engine to whistle before moving, and to indulge in a certain amount of whistling while shunting; but, sir, I utterly fail to see why the engines should give those series of prolonged, headsplitting shrieks which we have to put up with here. One would almost think that a lot of youngsters had got bold of the string and wore amusing themselves by trying to make as much row as possible. _ After getling a headache while meandering in the precincts of the station, I stroll into Queenslrcot, and if it happens to be about four o'clock in the afternoon, at every corner I have to pass newspaper boys, whose yelling is something awful. Jt isn't necessary for them to yell as they do, and it's most annoying to pedestrians. These things, coupled with the noise of the trams, are enough to make any ordinary individual want to keep eloa: of the town altogether. Aucklanders are proud of their city, and not without reason, but my opinion is that no other town in Now Zealand allows such hideous shrieks, yells, and noises as Auckland docs.-l am, etc., A.G.B.
