CUSTOMS RETURNS.
TOTAL FOR THE QUARTER. Thk Customs returns of the port of .Auckland for the quarter ended March 31, 1905, which have ju*t been completed, show that during that period the duty collected amounted to £173,820, as compared with £171,657 collected for the corresponding quarter of 1904— increase oi £2163. Ascompared with January, 1904. the returns for January, 1905, show a slight decrease, while those for February show * still greater decrease, and it was therefore in the mouth of March thai the revenue picked up again, the duty for the past month exceeding that of the same mouth of 1904 by £19,565. Of th> £173,820 collected during th- quarter just closed, sugar, molasses, and treacle contributed £35,465, manufactured tobacco £21,353, unmanufactured tobacco £408, cigarettes £5649, cigars £1713, spirits £20,850, goods ad valorem £71,651, and goods by weight £10.324. Altogethei £170,321 14s was collected under the general tariff, and £3498 14s undei the preferential, the figures for the corresponding period in 190< being £171,124, and £533 respectively.
The total consolidated revenue collected at the Customs at Auckland during the quarter was £184,193, which, compared with £182.701 collected for the first quarterin 1904, showy an increase of £1492. To beer duly is credited £5190, which represent* ;< decrease of £212 upon the returns for the corresponding quarter ot the previous year. In excise duty there is a. decrease of £317, whil» in respect to light dues, fees and other collections under the Shipping and Seamen Act there has been an increase from £2759 in the first quarter of 1904, to £285f in the quarter just closed. Pilotage and port charges, under the Harbours Act. show .«■ slight increase, while the amount, collected under the Chinese Immigration Act shows ? decrease of £700 upon the corresponding quarter of last year, the respective figures being £300 and £1000.
The gold duty collected under the head of local revenue was £4667 18? Id, a decrease of £35 15s. The following are the details, the figures in parentheses being those for the first quarter of 1904:—Ohinemuri, £659 (£972); Thames, £669 (£235), Coromandel, £423 (£3); I'iako. £6 (£1 ss); Waihi. £2881 (£3492 3s 9d); and Great Barrier Island, £25 (nil). For the past quarter 46,67907. of gold were exported, representing in value £189,207, and fox the first quarter in 1904, 47,0360z, representing £165,237.
