SPORTING.

Thk Champion Hack Plate, to be decided at the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting today,' has still 18 horses engaged, and with horses from various districts in the list, a wide interest will bo centred in the result. The race is run over seven furlongs at weight-for-age, with a scale of penalties and allowances. At last advices the following horses remained in the race: Pardon, 9sfc 111b; Flamen, 9st 91b; St. .Winifred, 9st 81b; Polyanthus, 9sfc 71b; Pretty Maid, 9st 31b; Lord Lovet, 9st 21b: Immolation, Bst 121b; Gawain, Bst 111b; Matakokiri, Bst 111b; Bourasane, Bst 111b; Chartreuse, Bst 111b; Jolly Friar. Bst 91b; San Paulo, Bsfi 71b; Electric Gun, Bsfc 61b; Sir Percivale, Bst 21b; Refine, Bsfc 21b; Pearl Necklet, Bst: Lady Lyonors, Bst. It will be seen that an Auckland stable claims a, double, string to its bow in the shape of San Paulo and Pearl Necklet, both of which are owned by Mr. J. Marshall. They were in good nick when despatched to the scene, and they are expected to run well. Lady Lyonors, a three-year-old daughter of Multiform, who hails from Mr. Stead's stable, is popularly looked upon as the one most likely to claim the attention of the judge.

Achilles defeated Machine Gnu in such easy style, in the North Island Challenge Stakes, run at the Hutt last week, that their meeting to-day at Pnlmerston North in the Manawatu Stakes is hardly invested with that keen interest which should be present when two cracks are on hand to try conclusions. Machine Gun will, there can be no doubt, be greatly benefited by the distance of to-day's race being a furlong shorter than that over which the North Island Challenge Stakes was run, but with every reason to accept as a fact that Achilles has recovered his best form, there does not appear much room for questioning the ability of the chestnut son of Medallion to again assert his superiority over the brown .son of Hotchkiss.

The Castor gelding l'aritutu lias come through the large amount of racing exacted from him during the past three months in. a manner that shows him to be .possessed of an excellent constitution. He handles himself most freely in his work, and a good few estimate him to have a first-class chance in the Kaster Handicap. Paritutu is engaged in the principal race set down for decision to-day at Avondale.

The Auckland Racing Club's autumn programme will require further attention at the hands of horseowners on or before Friday next at nine p.m., on which date acceptances close for the Easter Handicap, Brighton close for the Easter Handicap. Brighton Hurdle Race, and Autumn Steeplechase, together with entries for the minor events. Mr. Evetfc will declare the weights for the Tradesmen's Handicap, Eden Handicap, Onslow Stakes, Pony Handicap, and Tramway Handicap on the following Monday.

The A.P.O. Easter Handicap candidate Regulation is engaged in the Longburn Handicap of 200sovG, to be run at Ihe Manawatu Racing Club'- meeting to-day. Should me Regcl mare ore a victory she will be mulct in a.7ib penalty for the Eilerslio race.

The Waikato contingent engaged at the Avondalo and Ellerslie meetings arrived on Monday to fulfil their engagements. P. Jones' brought down Romeo and Storyteller, while R. llannou journeyed with" Zuleika and Bellman.

The owner of Mocassin and Taltine has cooled off the project trip with, the New Zealand pair to Oukiipariiiga, and the horses are to bo allowed to drop out of their respective engagements at the big meeting impending there.

Telephones are being fixed on the course at. JL'lemington, connecting with the. officials and stewards, the object being to prevent crooked miming'. The idea is that it arises frm sudden fluctuation of betting oi other causes at the last moment. The starters will be advised, to give a jockey a warning that he is being watched closely, or the starter may send a message to the stewards übom* any jockey. ■ ■« - AVONDALE ."JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMX MEETING. NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS. fliY I'HAETON.'j The Avondale Jockey Club will inaugurate their autumn meeting to-day. and should fine weather prevail, a good crowd of racegoers may lie expected to put in an appearance at the western suburb, as the- prospects or a capital afternoon's' .-pott are decidedly good. The opening event of the programme is ihe Maiden Handicap, ami with 13 horses engaged it may be inferred (hat the issue is very ouen. Beabird and Silica are the pair I like best. Bellman and Irish will probably fight out the issue in the Hurdle Race, and they may come home in thai order.. With ten horses engaged in the Juvenile Handicap the youngsters' race should be brimful of interest-.* If Devonyort is in a position to register his best form, he should lave a. fust-class chance. Of the Ellerslietrained lot. Annette and Dartlauus stand out most prominently. Probably whatever beats Annette will supply the winner. The Avondale Handicap is rendered a rather unsatisfactory event- to deal with, by reason ot several of the contestants claiming an engagement in the Easter Handicap, for a victory in the Avondale, Handicap carries with it a 71b penalty in the Ellcrsli© race, and that is a serious matter, in at least three quarters. I must say that, 1 would prefer to sum up the question shortly before the start than now. However, I must, endeavour to assist my readers to solve the question, and I will name Strathnvou and Durable to fight it out. ' The Chevalier Handicap;'' which is limited to horses that have not won a certain amount in stakes, is cast on welter weight lines. which, I take it, serves to further mystify those who isek for the winner. Pukekoho and Autahi may be the pair to tight ii out. Lady Annie, Austerlitz, and Chola each appear to have a, good winning chance in the Railway Handicap, and they may finish in that order. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES,

Yesterday morning was favourable for training purpose-!, but the work was chiefly of an uninteresting character. Trainers had the privil*i7f of {-tallopiJig their horses en the outside of the course proper, but low availed themselves of it, the isn and sand track-, b«i»<t preferred. Scottj and Delania were a brace to make use of the course proper, tho stable mates being responsible for > nicely-execnted-fire furlongs, in which the pace was on. Lady Annie was treated to v circuit 'hi the sand." the little daughter of Soult moving nice and free. Lady llune was treated to a round on the tan, moving; in resolute style. Strathavon was responsible for a round on th© sm» tradk, being brought home by The Needle ovet the last foin furlongs. Noteorini shaped well in five furlongs on the sand. Paritutu and Durable pub in a couple of rounds on the sand, tho pair spurting home from th..: head of the straight. Paritutu pleased most. Kcmeo, vrho looks well, was restricted to an easy five furlongs on the sand. Putty was exercised- on the same track, moving in resolute style.
