WEST KM) ROWING CLUB. In spite of the inclemency of the weather, the West End Rowing Club held trial four- oil Saturday last, in 111«> presence of a few 011thusiasts. . The prizes were presented for competition by Mr. W. W. Wright, (one of tiie club's committeemen), and 12 crews took part. Mr. C. 11. Cato acted a> judge, and Mr. A. Wilson as starter. (Ruin's crew won the first race by a little over a length, and I'. Gutry four won the second race by a length, the second and third crews overlapping. I'*. Browne's combination won the third race by a length, the second and third crews in this race also overlapping, ami the fourth raw was won with half a length only to spare by \\ . Maekrell's crew. The coxswains' race—two crow*.-—proved a spirited contest, the l boys rowing well, and was won, with a narrow margin to snare, by S. Weston's crew. The final in the adult'trial fours was contested by the four winners, viz.: .V. Ouin (stroke), P. C. Weston, ll.hinder, and C. Wykes; F. Gntry (stroke). A. Arniitage, 11. R. Bigelow, and W. Ross; i. A. Browne (stroke). M. Alison, C. Carter, and S. Hazard: and W. .Mack 1 (stroke). P. D. Wright, F. Morell, and C. Baliantyne. This proved a great go, not three lengths separating the four boat.s at the finish, 1". A. Browne's crew getting homo first, three-quarters of a length ahead of Gutry's combination, the third and fourth boats having only three feet between them. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the Ladies' Committee, and despite the unpleasant weather a pleasant afternoon was spent. NORTH SHORE ROWING CLUB. North Shore Rowing Club held their ninth set Ojf club trials on Saturday afternoon, in front of tho clubhouse, for the challenge cup presented by Messrs. W. Swinnerton, Cossar, and Orpwocd, also trophies presented by Mr. Sehimitz. The conditions were none too favourable for rowing, the sea in the earlier part of the afternoon being very lumpy. Mr. W. Swinnerton, as judge, had some very close finishes to decide. Afternoon tea and refreshments were dispensed by Mrs. Swinnerton. The first race of the day brought out crews stroked bv W. Logan and B. Ycolatid, Logan's crew winning by half a length. In the second race N. Smith and G. C. Wynyard stroked crews. After a great go Smith .s crew lasted long enough to win by 4lt from Wynyard's four. P. (Jerrard and H. H. Bayly stroked crews in the third race. This race was one of the most exciting. Gerrard's crew were leading within 200 yds from home, when Bayly's four, with a real good finish, managed to get up in time to make a dead heat of it. The same two crews competed again. After the boats had kept level for about three-quarters of the journey it looked like another dead heat, when Bayly's boat had the misfortune to take in a heavy sea. which robbed the race of all its interest, Gerrard's crow coming in. easing up, first. After the crews had partaken of refreshments the winners "of the heats rowed the final as follows: — (1) W. Logan, IT. Palmer, T. Fair. H. Gruhb, McDonald (cox): (2) N. Smith. F. !'. Burgees. M. Harrison. W. De Renzy. Lc.ekley (cox): (3) P. Gerrard, G. Miller. G. I'cacocke, W. Bongard, Allen (cox). The crews hit tho water as one. Smith crew leading a great deal of the way, when Logan's four spurted very strongly, winning by a canvas from Smith's crew, Gorrard a length awav third. Cheers were then given for the donor- and winners.
