THE BATTLE OF MUKDEN.

THE RUSSIAN STRENGTH.

JAPANESE LOSSES.

(Received March 19, 4.28 p.m.)

London, March 18.

Russian prisoners say that the army under the command of General Kuropatkin at the opening of the battle of Mukden numbered 480,000 men.

More than 10,000 Russians, including 1000 men in the hospital, were captured within the city of Mukden.

The Japanese casualties in the battle of Mukden numbered about 55,000. Those of General Oku alone were 20,000. His losses were heavy because he encountered the entire force detailed by General Kuropatkin to protect the line of retreat.
