POLAR EXPLORATION.

RUSSIAN EXPEDITION LOST. By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright. London - , March 16. The Polar expedition under Baron Toll, which was despatched from Russia in 1900, in the ship Zarya, io explore New Siberia Islands" (islands off the coast of Siberia), is now regarded as having been lost. Lieutenant Kolchar, who was sent in command of an expedition to search for the explorers, has found a letter at Bennett Island dated 1903, in which it was stated that the food of the expedition was exhausted. New Siberia consists of a group of uninhabited islands, rocky and icebound, in the Arctic Ocean, between 200 and 300 miles from the northern coast of Siberia. There are four islands. Bennett Island is to the north of tho group. Baron Toll, with one companion, was landed on Bennett Island, in 1902. _ A ■ search expedition that returned to Russia last year reported that papers had been found on Bennett Island stating that the two men had left there on November 8, 1902, and were proceeding southward to the Now Siberia Islands.
