CHESS MATCH BY TELEGRAPH.

I AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. IT was the original intention to bring the chess match by telegraph between Auckland and Wellington to a conclusion on Saturday, October 22, but as eleven games were left unfinished, in a condition which would entail a deal of time and labour on the part of the adjudicator, the Wellington players proposed to devote another evening to the contest. | Auckland players agreed to this suggestion, and the match was continued on Saturday ; last. There was no trouble with the telegraph wire on this occasion, and everything: went smoothly from Aral to last. Of the eleven games remaining five were finished, three wins going to Wellington, Auckland one •win and one draw. The remaining eleven positions will be sent to Mr. Forsyth, of Dimedin, to be adjudicated upon. At the present stage Auckland has sustained a bad defeat, the score being: Auckland,.3i; Wellington. 10i. Mr, Forsyth's verdict, however, is likely to improve tiie local team's position. Boards 18 (Spencer v. Jessiop) and 19 (Dutton v, Gylis) should count as wins for Auckland. The positions at boards 4 and 6 seem also in favour of Wellington's opponents. Boards 1 and 8 look like draws. The difficult ending between Messrs. Grierson and W. E. Mason was watched with interest, but at time of adjournment there was no material difference in the position. The game at board 9 between Messrs. F. W. Smith and Helling was at the start in favour of the Wellington player, but at move 43 he miscalculated and lost a piece, his adversary scoring the game shortly after, being the only direct win for Auckland. At board 12 Mr. McKay (Auckland), when his opponent, Mr. Lane, offered an exchange of queens, readily accepted, as a certain win appeared in sight, but to the mortification of the player and the onlookers it was discovered that one of the Wellington man's pawns had been accidentally brushed off the board, which, when replaced, completely altered the aspect of affairs, the victory refine with the Wellington player.
