THE CENTRAL MISSION.
Mr. Geo. Mills, of the Sydney Y M.C.A., preached at the Albert-street Hall last evening. His remarks were based on the text,," He cams unto His own and Hi» own. received Him net" John I. ii. Mrs. Hiirsou sat) " The Better Land." Mr. H. Carter gave .a Gospel address. The mission superintendent announced that a Toung Men' 6 Literary and Social Club had been formed for memb;rs of the Mission and those who attended the services. A " converted Jew" is expected to speak next Sunday. NEWTON CONGREGATIONAL SUNDAYSCHOOL. The fortieth anniversary of the Newton Congregational Sunday-school was celebrated by special services in the Choral Hall yesterday. The morning' service was conducted by the Rev. Geo. Burgess, in the afternoon by the Rev. C. H. Garland, and that in the evening by the Rev. J. B. Russell. The gathering* were largely attended, espee'-illy the evening service. Special anniversary b. mns were sting by the scholars, under the conductorship OS Mr. "W. E. Baxter. The annual ton and public meeting vrill be held in the schoolroom, iklinkiii'gh-street. to-morrow evening. ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL. A crowded congregation assembled last night at St. Pal rick's Cathedral to hear the performance selections from EayJu's " Creation." Their rendering was a great success. The programme opened with " The Heavens Are Telling," which received i fine interpretation, the chorus doing some splendid work. The beautiful soprano solo and chorus, " The Marv'lous Work," was rendered by Madame Tree, who sustained it in a highly artistic and finished manner. In "On Thee Each Living Soul Awaits" (trio), Madame Tree, Mr. Frank Graham, and Mr. Rupert Manteil did full justice to their parts. The duct and chorus, "By Thee With Bliss," was given in a devotional manner, as also w*s the trio " Most Beautiful Appear," the soloists again being heard to greaS advantage. •'The Lord is Great" (trio and choruii) was given in good style. For the offertorium Madame Tree sang " The Prayer," from Tannhaui.er." This was given in an artistic and dignified manner, the singer's phrasing being perfect. Benediction of the Blessed flacraaicnt followed, the ' Adoremus" closing the service. Mr. P. F. Hiaooeks conducted with his usual ability, wliile Mr. Harry Hiswcks played the difficult organ accompaniments in an artistis manner. THEOSOPHT. On Saturday evening, at the rooms of the H.P.B. branch, Theosophieal Sooicty, Mr. Simpson lectured on "War: Is it Right or Wrong!-" The lecturer contended that war is at the present time a potent means of evolution for men who have not yet developed courage and unselfish devotion. Last evening, in the rooms of the Auckland Theosophical Society, Miss A. E. Davidson lectured on " ifagiciens of Darkness and of Light."
