THE SCHOOL OF MINES.
PROPOSED TRANSFER TO AUCKLAND.
DEPUTATION TO THE
PREMIER,
[.BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL COI.IRESPOXDEXT.]
WEr.tiNTGTo?.-, Saturday.
i The Premier was wailed upon Inst, evening ! by a deputation consisting of some 25 Otago and Canterbury members in reference to the proposed removo.l of tho University School lof Mines from Dunedin to Auckland. In reply, Mr. Seddon made no definite etato- | merit, but ho said that tho present cost of the school was not justified by the results which wore being achieved. As to tho claims of Canterbury, ho said that engineering and mining- engineering and mining went muoh moro naturally together than was the ease with the special subjects pursued at tho Otago University College. Canterbury hail made no claim in opposition to Otago, but had merely said: "If you say the school is to leave Otago it should bo intercepted here on its way North." Seeing that Canterbury ant] the West Coast were closely bound together, and would be more so when, the Midland railway was completed, bo thought Canterbury was making out a very good case. The Government had ro wish to interfere with the Otago University or its School of '.Mines. This latter could be carried on by the University if desired, but he thought they could not, and if they reduced expenditure on the Medical School they would cripple the good work which was now being done there.
