Captain and Mm S. C. Gatows left Wellington for Auckland by the Mokoia yester- ; dar. The Hon. H. Scotland, M.L. was a passenger from Wellington by the Rarawa yesterday. Mr. Charles Ransou, general manager of ibe'Kortliera Steamship Company, returned from Wellington by the Rarawa yesterday Mr, D. A. Sutherland, Mayor of One'hunga, who has been on a visit to, Wellington, returned by the Rarawa yesterday. Mr. P. R. Lank shear, of Well glen, has won the Sir George Grey scholarship in connection with this year's examination at Victoria College. Mr. C. V. Houghton, manager of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company, returned ■ from his visit to the South by the Rarawa yesterday. Mr. Lundon, of Petone, Wellington, who has been on an extended tour to China, Japan, ami Europe, was a passenger from London by the Wakanui yesterday. The Rev. W. E. Gillam, of St. Matthew's Church, is a passenger by the Paparoa, now due in Wellington, from England. Mr. Gillam is expected to reach Auckland early next week.

At the Y.M.C.A. concert last evening special mention was made of the illness of Mr. Phillpot, which had prevented him itrom tendering his annual concert to the Association, and a warm vote of sympathy was carried bv the audience.

Mr. Carey James Pirie. son of LieutenantColonel Pirie, of Auckland, is an engineer on. the British steamer Tashung, which (as ■mentioned in a cablegram in Friday's Herald) struck a mine when she was off the Shantung peninsula. He has cabled to hit;' father stating that he is safe. Our Coromandel correspondent writes: —The Rev. Win. Thompson, M.A., 8.D., formerly minister of. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Suva. Ralph, who prior to his departure from Auckland was extensively interested in..local gold mining; lias been turning his attention to diamond mining in South Africa. A recent exchange _ details the acceptance by the. Winberg Diamond Syndicate, Limited (Mr. J. G. Ralph',' chairman of directors), of an o-Ser by a London firm of £300,000 for the company's property. '•■ • A Press" Association message from Christehuroh states that Mr. Bert Royie has received a cable from Johannesburg,, concerning; Miss Campion, to the effect that the "doctors entertain, no hope of Miss Campion 'being able to undertake the passage home to Australia for : soma ■ months. She has had a'relapse, and is at present in ,the nursing home at Johannesburg. She sends 'hex grateful thanks to Mr. Royle and the New Zealand people for the response made to her appeal iter help. ; ■".■'.'■. ;_
