The. chair was taken by Mr. W. Thompson, who explained that the.scheme, if allowed to be inaugurated, would menace the health of a rapidly-growing district, and that the ■ drainage from the proposed depot would ■ ■ pollute the only stream'of fresh water-that several settlers used. The depot, if -placed! on such a public place, where score 1 of settlers must pass, being on the main road, would prejudice and retard the progress or the district for many miles. The railway, station and. New Lynn Hotel were within* - . i quarter, of a. mile, as well as the homes of | several settlers, and the depot site was dii rectly opposite the Government Hetana h** s -* ; let.. It was, Mr. Thompson pointed out,*- de- '.•;■; | cidedly a more publio position than Pom* Chevalier. 5.,.% Dr. Frengley, the district 'heal! officer,: attended and stated that he intended to have I the work carried out in a systematic way, and that every precaution would be taken to prevent it being a nuisance or a danger to the public health. Mr. Sack moved and Mr. D. Cochrane seconded, " That we, the ratepayers ami • ,' residents ci" New Lynn, are surprised "<anu ' indignant at, and do most strenuously object to, the action of the suburban boroughs of ,- Auckland creating a publio nuisance, ana menacing the health of the district by_d»- • positing nightsoil therein, and that the w■ • temata County Council be requested to take ; immediate notion to prevent the continuance lof such nuisance, and that they be requested \ ! to take steps to enforce tue penalties incurrent under the Public Health Act, law. by those persons who have infringed such , | Act by allowing nightsoil to _be deposited on their premises without receiving the consent of the local authority." | : This was carried unanimously.
