The weather has taken a turn'for the better to-day. The rain ceased late last nigh£, and to-day we have only had one or two light showers. The sky 'still looks somewhat threatening, but I think we may fairly assume that the worst of the squall is over. The tracks at Riccarton were Very .wet and unsafe for fast work this morning, so that the work was confined chiefly,, to trotting and cantering. The visiting horses have commenced, to put in an appearance* and with the prospect of more favourable weather we should witness some interesting work during the next few : days. ;J. i McGuinness arrived from Dunedin last night with Ailsa, Crichton, Grown Imperial and the two-year-olds ; Alexis and Tramontan.a. To-day's boat from Wellington brought Mahutonga, Convoy, Melodeon, King Billy, Solution and Patuna, and all the visitors will probably bo stretched out on Saturday morning. .; . , , , ! . Cyrus is reported to be lame, and he is regarded as an improbable starter at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting. | \ Straight-out betting on the New Zealand' Cup is quiet, business being chiefly: confined to the Cup and Stewards' Handicap doubles. The favourite combinations are Grand Rapids and Machine Gun and Grand Rapids and Golden Lily, which are marketable.at 16 to 1; and 20 to 1 respectively. There are ; no changes in the Cup quotations, though Grand Rapids and Calibre show a tendency to harden. ' ; • '" - . WEIGHTS DECLARED. . '■'.' AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SPRING ..'■ MEETING. .'" >• . TRAINING NOTES. . The weather yesterday morning was more in keeping with winter than spring, but though rain threatened at dawn it kept off until the breakfast interval, and tramera were therefore not seriously hampered. The» greater part of the work was performed -on. the outside of the course proper. A couple of moderates in the shape of Woodfield and Stromness were again first to commence, and in a slow six furlongs Woodfield had the best of it. Lady Annie (solus) strode oyer the same distance in faster time, and birton Girl, who followed, compassed seven, furlongs in a pleasing manner. Avalanche was exercised over a mile, and though the j time was not fast the little daughter of Soult did not fail to please. Lycia and Dunmore were companions in a half-mile flutter, the pair moving resolutely. Rambler was sent & mile, Hinekoa accompanying him for three furlongs, when the two-year-old Grouchy took on th© Guineas candidate. Rambler tired perceptibly in the last furlong, and his finish was rfofat.all satisfactory. Yolette had the best of Noteorini over seven; furlongs, which she accomplished nicely. Bother, who seems to have shaken off her soreness, had all the best of Baltimore over half a mile. Lady Bobs and Woodmount ran seven furlongs in decent style, the daughter of Soult holding her companion safely at the close. Idas ran a mile and aquarter in good style. Numa was to have accompanied the bay mare over the concluding part of tha journey, but he got rid of his rider, and Idas finished ; alone, Numa, subsequently ran six furlongs in a satisfactory manner. Delania had the best of Sonoma at the end of six furlongs. Hakariab and Guronation ran six furlongs, the. firstnamed having the best of it. Putty ran a mile and a-quarter decently, but he was not asked to do his best. Lovelink beat Simple Simon over six furlongs, and Lualla had the best of Alba Rose over a similar: distance. Mechanic and Tahuta ran a decent -four furlongs. Muthema put in a four-furlong gallop in really nice style. Manoeuvre had the; best oi; Agraith, Sergius. and v Waitata. Fashionable seemed to nave the'best of Sir Gilead at the end of seven furlongs, and Moira Ma Chree beat Sitkie over four furlongs.. Dolores and Daffodil were slackened out for a mile, the first-named; having the best of it and shaping well. La Cigale finished in; front of Soultfish in a respectable five furlongo. Hohoro, who looks in splendid buckle, shaped ■ resolutely in a half-mile breather. The "Needle galloped seven s furlongs on .the - tan in.a satisfactory manner. In a circuit on'the course Up-to-Date had the best of NgasTi, and Waipuna beat Escape | over seven furlongs on the same " track. J Peter Simple was sent over the schooling 3

hurdles. Ho jumped three proficiently, but ; he nearly came down iii negotiating the concluding obstacle. Maroon and Gold and Wellcast galloped a strong mile, the firstnamed showing to most advantage. The . Guineas candidates, Monoform, Gladstone and King Paul, who were each slackened out over a mile on the preceding afternoon, were restricted to light tasks. ' - • •■; r ACCEPTANCES.
