The necessity for improving the shipping facilities of Otago Harbour is very much before the public just now, and visits of large ocean-going steamers have shown that the upper harbour is in an exceedingly unprepared state for their reception. At the meeting of the Board this afternoon, notice of motion was given that the engineer be requested to ; report on the best means of improving the steamers' basin by, say, abolishing the Tongue Wharf; widening Rattray-street Wharf, and giving it necessary and up-to-date .conveniences for the discharge and loading of intercolonial steamers; improving permanently the Rattray-street crossing leading on to the comer of the Cross and Rattraystreet Wharves, and the probable cost of these improvements. - /
