Business has {,000 mainly confined to mining stock, although investment etock have not been altogether neglected. Oats are- . TOT y firm, with orders for Africa and Lon- | don at tho rates now ruling. Bran and , pollard are both inclined to be easier. Onions are in rather short supply, and another advance in Melbourne has taken effect on this market. The samp!© is nott. particularly good, requiring repicking. Very fair orders for grass seed have boon received for spring sowing. Meadow foxtail is in short supply. Timber is in heavy demand for export, but the local trade is still rather quiet. Flax buyers are holding oft as much as pebble! as London and New York markets aro both weak. Fungus is in good demand. Evaporated fruits aro selling well. Pears and armies are unprocurable until arrival of next mail steamer. Currants are a nttle firmer, the latest news from Greece being against the crop. Figs are in smaller] compass. Dates are only selling quietly. , Tinned fruits are offering at lower rates. The demand has nit really come on yet. Salmon has been rather quiet, but halfpound tins have sold very readily and are now in short supply. . . ~ . A Calcutta report of August 15 states that the jute market for the week has ruled firm, andCn buying has further hardened prices of heavy goods for next year. At the -lose the position is rather quieter, with however no quotable change in rates. The forward buS put through is, of course, entirely speculative, such buyers relying a good deal on their success of the past season, and anticipating a similarly favourable outlet lor aunuies. It is. however, much too early to maka up any definite opinion in respect to the country harvests, while the recent weather reports issued are altogether favourable, showing an abundance of rain in the Bengal Kioto, and a deficiency in the Madras and Bombay Presidencies. Almost all goods.for the early months are scare©, and high prices are being p*3d to mefet the small export inqurry, which comes principally from Burmah. Business with tho United Kingdom 8 impossible, and doubtless stocks held thore are being worked off. Inquiries from the Straits and Far East should soon set in. and this must keep up values of both plain and-twilled goods to the close of the year. Trad© with the colonies has again been on » small swale, but any inquiry for cornsacks, particularly with business resulting, has the effect of firming up prices. Woolpacks are unchanged and firm- nnnet, advices . __. Castor ©il is much firmer, advices from Calcutta showing that crushers are holding out for full rates. . ... , Kerosene is being sold to arrive at the «nd of the month. ■
