PURCHASED BY THE GOVERNMENT. Thu property of the Thames Hauraki Gold Mining Company, consisting of the Queen of Beauty mine and the whole of the pumping plant, was put up to miblic auction yesterday at Messrs. S. Cochrane and Son's Bart- The only bid was that of Mr. H. A. ■Gordon, consulting engineer to the State eoal mines, to whom the property was knocked down at £1000. The purchase of the Thames Hauraki Company's deep level plant by the Government m Auckland to-dky is regarded here as one of the most important undertakings yet entered into by the Government on behalf of the mining industry. It is proposed to fcllow the plant to be worked on reasonable conditions by any company which may be formed to test deep levels at the Thames.
