VOLUNTEERING NEWS.

WIIANGAREI RIFLE VOLUNTEERS. THE inspection of the Whangarei Rifles took place in the Drill Hall, Whangarei, .an the 7th inst. There was a fair muster, Lieutenant J. W. McGregor in charge. Colour-Sergeant Pearce put the men through some useful compan v movement:; anil the bayonet exercise, afterwards dividing the corps up into squads. Sergeants Mackersy, Develin, and Harden then putting them through the manual and firing exercises. Colour-Sergeant Pearce next informed the men that Captain Stoadman had offered a service rifle to he competed for by the members at the close of the volunteer year (next February), officers and non-commissioned officers excluded. Points for attending drills and inspections are to count.

MARSDEN MOUNTED RIFLES. The Waipu division of the Maraden Mounted Rifles met at the Junction Hall, AVaipu, on Saturday, May 2, when there was a splendid muster, every member being present excepting one who was absent through sickness in his family. In the evening the division paraded in the Junction Hall, and had two hours art}. a-half hard drilling in squads. The men paid the most marked attention, and are getting: on well with their drill, both mounted and on foot. Lieutenant McMillan (who was in command) remained in Waipu until Tuesday, looking up a suitable range for the division. One has been found with a sandhill about SOEfc high for back 1 ground, and about 1600 yds clearway across Government land within half-a-mile of the township wharf. The flats and Bands maka Waipu the ideal site for a mounted camp. The Maungakaramea and Whan gar ei divisions arc making preparations for the camp, which is to be held at Para a "Bay on: the 16th inst. The officers have issued invita- 1 lions to a number of the residents of Whangarei and Parua Ray to a camp warming. A church parade is to take place on Sunday, the 17th inst.—[Own Correspondent.]

Lieutenant Tapper thanked the Pukekohe team for the splendid manner in which they had been treated, although the notice of their coming had been so short. He said he .hoped to see Pukekohe visit them at. an early date, and fire a return match. The Engineers left for town by the half-past five train, amid cheers, having thoroughly enjoyed their trip to tat country, notwithstanding the losr -i Hie match. ________ COMPETITION AT WAIHI. Toy telegraph.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAIIII, Monday. 1 On Saturday teams representing the Ohineinuri No. 3 (Waihi) and No. 1 (Paeroa) fired a 10 men a-side match on the local range at 200 500. and 600 yards, and after a, rather exciting finish the local team won by eightpoints. The following are the scores:— Ohinemuri No. 3: Private Parslow, 90; Sergeant Clarke. 89; Lieutenant Ready, 89; Private A. Samson, 87; Private Weir, 85; Private 0.
