ATHLETIC NOTES.
AUCKLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS' RUGB UNION.
PONSONBY FOOTBALL CLUB'S SOCIAL. A VERY enjoyable social was held in t-ha Pou* sonby District Football Club's Training' Hall last Saturday evening. There was a very largo and enthusiastic attendance, Mr. M. J. Sbeahan presiding. The proceedings opened with a selection by the pianist (Mr. E. Lanigan}, after which the toast of " The King:" was drunk with enthusiasm. The Chairman, in his opening remarks, referred to the good work done by the committee of the Ponsonby District Football Club in erecting anil furnishing such a fine and commodious building:, and then said that it afforded him great; pleasure in welcoming Mr. Geo. Stephenson, late of Duncdin, whom the members present all knew had represented Otago. and latterly had played for the Yorkshire Football Club in England. The toast of " Our Guest, Mr. Geo. Stephenson." was proposed by Mr. M. Keefe. Mr. Stephenson, in responding' to the toast of his health, in a very happy speech, stated that after touring England and visit,in;? Yorkshire and Lancashire, the home of Rugby football, he considered that our New Zealand boys could hold their own in back play all the world over, and in conclusion thanked the Ponsonby District Football Club for the way they had received him, and wished them every success during the coming season. An excellent musical programme was much enjoyed.

CROQUET. The trophies awarded by the Auckland Croquet Championship Association for the past season will be presented this afternoon* between one and two p.m., on the lawns •<>■. the Auckland Club, Grafton Road. Mr. W. Coleman, president of the association, being at present out of town, Mrs. Coleman lias kindly consented to present the trophies. The ceremony will take place immediately on tho conclusion of the presenting of the Auckland Club trophies by Dr. Lindsay.
