!.■■' WEST END ROWING CLUB 1; Tbial fours the Kohn Shield, and «i final of the season, took ace on «*_ , * last. The outing proved one, many voting it the best of the sea! Considering the lateness the seUnthT' ■ i was a very-large attendance, it bein* «»•* ! mated that at one time there were 300 ••' j tors present, the greater portion bem» ; ladies. The arrangements were most mm plete, and everything from start to fiS I went with clock-like swing. Among 5* • ' visitors wore Bishop Lenihan, Mr A K V> (donor of the prizes), Dr. Morris (of M friendly societies' dispensary), and man ! other well-known, gentlemen. \ft e r n "' tea and refreshments were bountifX A* pensed, under the able management of "■ ; committee of energetic ladies, and tool v praise cannot be given them for the s£j 'V lent way in which the club's hospitalitywas managed Musio was provided by the nan Band, and much appreciated 41 +£ "' request of the officers of the club, the hand on the balcony played a charming selection of Irish airs, as a compliment to the genial. The racing, as usual at West End, was » tremely interesting, and the Selection Com mitteo of the club are to be congratulated ; on the success of their labours. The start mg was in the capable hands of Mr J Jj iuaxwell, and the club were again indebted ii to Mr. Reynolds for so kindly granting tha use of his fine steam launch Whati for th« ' starter's use. Mr. J. Clark, an ex-oaptaia of the club, acted as judge, a very onerous position, as all the finishes were astonish ingly close. Three crews, stroked resneo. tively by D. V. Hanna, W. Wright, and Court, competed in the first race, which' after a most determined go, was won by the firstnamed by a-quarter of a length, the- ' crew being D. V. Hanna (stroke), C. Whitehouse, G. Whitehouse, and J. Hodgson • The second heat brought out three crews' G. 0. Stephenson, J.OEL Bigelow, and W. e' Cossar respectively being the strokes. This race was also won by a bare quarter "of a length, G. O. Stephenson. (stroke) B Notton, W. McLeay, and L. M. Lane being the victors. Four crews competed in the third beat, stroked by A. Littleproud, ?. H N. Cossar, F. Littleproud, and J. Cardigan} From a fine start the four crews came along : almost even till three-quarters of the journey had been rowed, when a most determined spurt landed Littleproud's tour (F. Littleproud, A. M. Wilson, J. Noton, and ' J. W.Maxwell) winners by a bare length from Carrigan's four very fine race. it," The three viotors competed in the final ■ for the viotory, the winners' names to be inscribed on the permanent shield, as well : as the crew each receiving a trophy. - All :-'■■■ three crews felt equal to the task, and "al- 1 though all the races of the first heat had been well contested, it was seen that if pos- * sible the final would be bettor. Till almost the last stroke it was doubtful whether Hanna's crew or F. Littleproud's would be ;, successful, Stephenson's four being a very'-' short distance away. Each crow spurted >' towards the finish, and until almost the last stroke the issue seemed doubtful, and a; v dead heat was looked for by many. ; : A ? dozen strokes from home, however, Little- M proud's four were not to be denied, and rowing a very strong combination, gained the verdict by only 3ft from Hanna's crew,, the • third crew being only a length behind. The winners were heartily cheered as they came to the beach, the losing crews also receiving a great ovation as they landed; 8 Before the final for the Kohn Shield an old members' race was held, the first prizes ' being valuable pipes, presented by Mr., W. i H. Bartlett, honorary member. A great : deal of interest was taken in the race, in ■ which four crews—l 6 men—took part,'and as they went out to the boats from the clubhouse they received lusty cheers from the present members, quite a pleasing recogni- §| tion, which must have proved very gratifying. The following were the crews:—■(l) H. Cook (stroke), W. Sands, J. Morley Bell, and G. Carter; (2), R. R. Masefield (stroke), J. Leilas, S. i. Matthews, and J. A. Armi-» tage; (3) R. R. Bowden (stroke). C. Sly- , field, J. Darby, and H. Bell: (4) H. Sands, J. Baxter, G. Mills, and H. Gentles. • The'?. veterans objected to row a shorter course . than was rowed by the members foi the - Kohn Shield; in fact, some in their zeal wanted to lengthen the, journey to a mile instead of three-quarters. From a fine atari;-. 1 ' the "old boys" showed tfaat they had not i, forgotten' how to wield* a bit of pine, and , the race proved conclusively that it'should 1 beoome an annual ' fixture. Cook's crew -.' gained the judge's verdict > by something'. under a length, all the other boats overlap- I ping. Some of the men competing had not used a scull for 10 years, but all expressed the hope that next year would see another ' such event, and with twice the number com- '■■;.. peting. , :■ ': .'■; ; •-, Hearty cheers by all West Enders to Mr. Kohn for his generosity, to Bishop Lenihan for his great kindness, and " God Save ' the King," by the band, brought the day's ■. proceedings to a close, and it was voted on *. all hands a record wind-up. thanks to the able management of Mr. C. Wilson (captain), ably seconded by his officers and committee. • - • - ■ .'. -. . ■ ' .- MANUKAU YACHT CLUB.' . The annual social of the above club wis held in the Drill Hall.
