ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
[by TELEGRAPH. —press ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Tuesday. A man named Stevens, who arrived by the steamer yesterday from Gisbome, attempted suicide by cutting his throat in the police cell this morning. On the arrival of the steamer yesterday he claimed police 'protection, and inquiry on board showed that Stevens had been behaving strangely on the voyage down. He was accordingly locked up on a charge of lunacy. He came out of the cell about nine this morning for a wash, and returned shortly afterwards, but when the police opened his cell at ten to take him to.the Court, he was found to have attempted to cut his throat with a piece of glass. The wound is severe, but is not expected to prove fatal.
