CHARGES AGAINST A NEW ZEALAND MINING SECRETARY.
HIS ARREST IN LISBON. . [FllOXt our OWN correspondent.] London, January 2. This morning a London paper stated that Inspector Fonton, of the city police, was leaving London for Lisbon, where Mr. William Parker Owen, the secretary of a number of city companies, will bo handed over to him. Mr. Owen is charged with embezzling large sums in connection with, the Glen rock Company and a New Zealand gold mining company, and ho will be brought to London for trial. The sum involved is said to amount to several thousand pounds. Having received the necessary documents through tho Foreign Office, tho Lisbon authorities, it is added, have grunted the extradition of Mr. Owen. The only company answering tc the description of the Glenroek was the Indian Glenrock (Wynaad) Company, which, it will be remembered, was formed out of the old New Zealand Glenrock. At the snme offices in London are those of the Premier and the Premier Sunrise, both New' Zealand companies. On making inquiries at these offices this afternoon I was informed that thev were the companies referred to, that Mr. Owen had been secretary, that a new secretary hid been appointed, and that the extent of the defalcations had not yet been discovered. [A recent cable message stated that Owen was committed for trial.]
