Napier, Wednesday. The Harbour Board received 28 applications for the position of harbourmaster and chief pilot. The filial ballot gave the appointment to Captain Lake, of the steamer Penguin. ■'; ~■';

Wellington, Wednesday. Edwards, who, with his son, was drowned in the Oreti River during a flood, is:a brother-in-law of Mr. Sutherland, of the local railway traffic staff.

Loan proposals, involving £15,000, for Council chambers, street improvements, drainage, etc., have been carried bv the ratepayers of Lower Hutt.

At the Lower Hutt Court, Dr. McArthur, S.M., recorded a conviction against a publican who pleaded guilty to selling liquor on election day, and ordered defendant to pay 27s costs. He took a lenient view of the case as defendant admitted the offence, and it was the first case of the- kind. '

Wkstpout, Wednesday. Mr. R. Taylor's new nine-roomed residence has been totally destroyed by fire, with all its contents. The insurances are £950 in the Norwich Union and United offices. The loss is about £1500. The origin of the fire is unknown.

The annual report of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, stated that after writing £5000 off works for wear' and depreciation, the balance-sheet shows a profit of £6690. Of this amount £3000 was distributed in June last by a dividend of four per cent. The directors recommended a further dividend at the same rate. • This leaves a balance of £690.

Invercargill, Wednesday. A single woman named Mary Fitzmaurice, aged 20, is reported to have died under suspicious circumstances at Riverton. The inquest has been adjourned till the 29th, to allow of a post-mortem examination.

] DUNEDIN, Wednesday. i Mr. W. Earashaw, the defeated candidate for Caversham, was presented by his supporters with a purse containing 85 sovereigns, and an enlarged photo, of her husband was presented to Mrs. Earnshaw.
