THE BISHOP-ELECT OF MELBOURNE.
By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.—Copyright.
(Received September 20, 4.49 p.m.) London, September 20. The newspaper Guardian describes the Bishop-elect of Melbourne (the Rev. Henry Lowther Clarke, M.A.) as a moderate evangelical Churchman. The Archbishop of York and the Bishop of Wakefield strongly recommended the appointment.
Referring to the appointment of the Rev. H. L. Clarke, M. A., to the Bishopric of Melbourne, the Sydney Daily Telegraph states that "he is said to be one of the best speakers in the North of England and the possessor of very line pulpit-presence. He has already refused one bishopric, at least, and leading Churchmen in England, including the Bishop of Manchester, sneak very highly of him. Archdeacon Hindley, of Melbourne, says ho is the best man suited for an Australian State. He will be of great value to the community in matters relating to higher education, while as an organiser and an all-round ecclesiastic he is the ideal of what a bishop ought to bo. Canon Clarice is a. moderate Churchman and no party man. He has a grown-up family."
