BOARD OF, EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held yesterday. Mr. 1,. J- Bagnall (chairman) presided, and there were also present: Messrs. Muir, MeKenzie, R. Hobbs, Rutherford, S. Luke, Mackay, Lambe and J. Blades.

Finance Committee: The report of the Finance Committee was adopted as follows: --Your committee recommend payment of the following accounts, which have been duly examined and initialled—Board fund, 18 vouchers, amounting to £171 Is Id ; building fund, 29 vouchers, amounting to £"306 17s 2d. Your committee have furnished to the Education Department a detailed statement of variations made in payment of teachers for the March quarter, 1902, from returns of staff and salaries as furnished to Department in February last. Your committee have made a distribution of the grants for aid to th? Coromandel and Waihi district high schools for the six months ended March 31, 1902, in accordance with the regulations. Your committee have submitted a claim to the Education Department for an allowance for rent of the building now occupied as the Technical School. Your committee recommend payment of the sum of £18 3s 7d, amount of judgment for rates ■upon site in Eden Terrace. Your committee have no suggestion to offer regarding the proposal of the Nelson Education Board for conference of Boards in Wellington. Teachers' Selection Committee: The report of the Teachers' Selection Committee was adopted as follows:—Your committee recommend that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board:—Mr. E. J. Darby, to be head teacher of Russell school; Mr. W. Lowrie, to be teacher of Nvhangarei Heads school; Mr. G. Tooman, .to be teacher of Okoroire school; Mr. E. W. B. Caddy, to be teacher of Mahurangi Heads and Mullet Point schools; Miss J. A. Eraser, to*be teacher of Pollok school; Miss A. M. Crickett, to be teacher of Kirikiriroa school; Miss M. E. Lambert, tube mistress of Hamilton West school; Miss Evelyn Wilson, to be mistress of Hikurangi school; Mr. J. C. Dromgool (B.Sc.), to be extra assistant atPaeroa District High School; Miss E. A. Nutsford, pupil-teacher, from Papatoetoe to Aoroa school. Your committee recommend that School Committees should be consulted in regard to proposed appointments as Hukerenui South, Mr. W. A. Joll; Ahuroa, Mr. A. it. Skelton; Wharehine, Miss A. Beatty; Grafton (second assistant), Messrs. J. Vuglar, S. Walker and R. Carnachan. Your committee recommend that applications for the position of mistress of the Kiliikihi and Waikiekie schools respectively should be invited by advertisement from teachers qualified to "take charge of infant classes. Your committee recommend that the request of the Paparoa School Committee for the appointment of a mistress in lieu of two pupil-teachers should be deferred for further consideration. Your committee recommend that the commissioner of the Maketu school should be informed that, under the colonial scale, the school is not yet entitled to the services of an assistant. Your committee submit a protest from the Parawai School Committee against the removal of Mr. R. M. Harvey, pupil-teacher, and recommend that the committee should be informed in reply that the Board is obliged to bring the staff into conformity with the colonial scale. Auditor's Report: The report of the auditor of school fund accounts stated that the unexpended balance at the end of the year amounted to £1568.

Technical School: The appointment of Mr. George George as director of the Technical School was confirmed, and it was decided to cable Homo to that effect. Tenders: The tenders of Messrs. Halliday and Dillworth for purchase of dwelling at Pukekohe for removal were declined, and it was decided to call for fresh tenders.

Promotion of Teachers: The proposals of the chairman of the Otago Board as to promotion of teachers and the alteration of the constitution of boards, deferred from last meeting, came up for consideration. It was decided to acknowledge the circular and reply that the Board were not in a position to express an opinion on the questions it raised.

Applications: The following applications were dealt :—Kauaeranga, extra teacher, granted; Okiwi (Great Barrier), half-time school, granted; Te Kuiti, new school, referred to inspector. Several applications for new buildings and grants for repairs were also dealt with. Devonport Exhibition: An application from the Devonport School Committee for loan of kindergarten materials for their forthcoming exhibition was granted. Police as Truant ' Officers: The Katikati North Committee wrote, asking for appointment of Constable Dunn as truant officer for that district. The secretary (Mr. Rice) said it would be remembered that the Finance Committee had applied to the Minister for Education that the Board should have the assistance of the police,in conducting prosecutions for non-attendance at school. The Minister replied that he was unable to do this. The Police Department was willing that its officers should afford every assistance out of court, liut to enable them to do as the Board asked would entail them being appointed truant officers. The request of the Katikati Committee had been forwarded to the inspector of police, who now replied stating that the matter had been referred to the Commissioner of Police at Wellington, who had no objection to the appointment of Constable Dunn. The Board made the appointment as requested. Opotiki: The Minister consenting to the establishment of a district high school at Opotiki it was decided to inform the committee to that effect. Application for Employment: Mr G. P. Arnold's application for district high .sgliool work was deferred for further inquiry. Wellesley-street Gas Pipes: Mr. Mackay said the gas pipes at Wellesley-street school required attention. There was at present danger from fire on account of their condition. The matter was referred to the committee to confer with the Gas Company and architect.
