HARBOUR BOARD WORKS.

The decision of the Auckland Harbour Board upon the engineer question will be received without a dissentient voice. The salary offered is not what, the most experienced engineers are accustomed to receive, but it is a reasonably good one, and the wide circulation to be given to the need of the Board ought to bring a large number of worthy applications and enable the appointment of a suitable man. For we have not the slightest doubt 12 at having taken a decisive step tae Board will exercise all its inteligence and impartiality in the matter and will rid itself, once and for ever, of the weaknesses which have born? such costly fruit. We have expressed strong views upoc Harbour Board methods, but we have always pointed out that those methods are a legacy from the past and that the reluctance of the members to violently alter them was exceedingly natural and -be sympathised with. The only point was that no man should be upon the Harbour Board who was not prepared to perform his clear duty when public opinion was awakened and in active motion. The disposition of members to do their duty has now been evidenced, and while congratulating them on their action we may hopefully look for such further reforms as may be re Quired to make Auckland Harbour what it ought to be and its administration as modern and energetic as public bodies can fairly be expected to be.
